State tough on All-Africa preps

ELIZABETH CHATUVELA, Lusaka
GOVERNMENT says only sports disciplines with a good track record will be considered for the 2015 Congo Brazzaville All-Africa Games.
Ministry of Youth and Sport senior sports development officer Grace Soko said in an interview yesterday that the  State will ensure that only deserving athletes are selected for the continental games to avoid carrying ‘passengers’.
Soko said priority will be given to athletics, boxing and judo.
The three disciples have won medals at past All-Africa Games.
“We have been given a number of disciplines where we will field athletes but we are yet to come up with the list because we need to pick athletes on merit and not because there are free slots,” Soko said.
She said the ministry will on March 26 meet sports associations to strategise on the outing to Congo Brazzaville.
The deadline for submitting the list for the All-Africa Games is March 31.
The Congo Brazzaville games will be held from September 4-19.
