GOVERNMENT is in the process of transforming Charles Lwanga College of Education in Monze and Technical and Vocational Teachers College (TVTC) in Luanshya into information and communication technology (ICT) teacher education centres of excellence.
Minister of General Education Dennis Wanchinga says this will be done to strengthen both pre-service and in-service training capability in ICT for teaching, learning and research.
Dr Wanchinga said the two institutions will be equipped with necessary and relevant ICT infrastructure to support blended teacher training across their curriculum and programmes.
He said this in Lusaka yesterday during the launch of the China Funds-In-Trust (CFIT) project in Zambia whose theme is: “Enhancing teacher education for bridging the education quality gap in Africa”.
“We will also enhance institutional human resource capacity which will be achieved by deploying qualified ICT staff from other colleges of education or improve qualifications of existing ICT staff at the two institutions to equip teacher educators and teachers with the competences in the use of ICT,” Dr Wanchinga said.
He said the transformation of the two institutions is also aimed at creating an ICT platform to strengthen networking among the colleges of education, teacher educators, teachers and ICT technical staff as well as to enhance school-based Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Dr Wanchinga said the CFIT project implementation will facilitate 16 other teacher education institutions to be connected to the two centres of excellence.
“With regard to teachers, the targets are those teachers offering computer studies in schools, with the initial target being 20 schools per province,” he said.
And United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) assistant director general for education Qian Tang commended Gov-ernment for embarking on the implementation of the UNESCO-CFIT project.
Dr Tang said the training of teachers must go hand in hand with a balanced attention to other sub-sectors of the educational system such inculcating vital knowledge in pupils on HIV prevention.
