State to issue 5,000 titles

KELVIN MBEWE, Lusaka
THE Ministry of Lands says it is targeting to issue over 5,000 titles in the first quarter of 2017 under the National Titling Programme.
The Ministry said Kamwala South and Madido townships were earmarked for the first phase of title offers.
Permanent secretary Trevor Kaunda said this at the launch of ‘Timange ma Bondi’ promotion by Lafarge Zambia in Lusaka on Friday.
The promotion gives Lafarge cement customers a chance to win residential plots.
“We are currently marrying the information that is on the ground with what we have in the data base. We carried out a survey to determine whether the information corresponds and the structures are built in the right places,” he said.
Mr Kaunda said the National Titling Programme is aimed at mass issuing of certificates of title to provide security of tenure to the holders, and promote good governance and transparency in land administration.
“This programme will ensure systematic land registration in Zambia and regularisation of informal settlements to facilitate informed sustainable land use planning and management,” he said.
Mr Kaunda commended Lafarge Zambia for complementing Government’s efforts in ensuring that citizens have access to land.
“I’m aware of initiatives like Masukani House Ownership Programme for staff and local community. the Win a Dream Home campaign, Lafarge Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction and Kumanga Franchise aimed at enhancing entrepreneurship, especially among the youth,” he said
