State to equip women with ICT skills

DARLINGTON MWENDABAI & NAOMI MWIMBA, Chipata
GOVERNMENT will this year equip women with technology and entrepreneurship skills in an effort for the country to attain the “Planet 50:50” agenda by 2030.
Eastern Province Minister Makebi Zulu said once women are equipped with technology and entrepreneurship, they will drive the country’s development.
Mr Zulu said such empowerment would enable women to be competitive in work places and their communities.
He was speaking in Chipata in a speech read on his behalf by Eastern Province permanent secretary Chanda Kasolo during the commemoration of International Women’s Day last Wednesday.
Mr Zulu said the Ministry of Gender will facilitate the entrepreneurship and technology skills training with specific focus on the agriculture sector.
“GoverAnment is committed to ensuring the country achieves Planet 50:50 by 2030 by exploring various means of ensuring women and girls are included in the economic development of the country,” he said.
Mr Zulu urged stakeholders to continue supplementing Government’s efforts aimed at empowering women and girls socially and economically.
“Therefore, to change gender relations, we need to aim at activities that trigger positive change in the unequal relations within the social construction arena starting at family level,” he said.
And the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) in Eastern Province has called for the promotion of inclusive economic participation.
Provincial coordinator Dorothy Ndhlovu said despite efforts being made by Government to include women at various levels, majority of them have continued facing discrimination and systematic marginalisation in national development.
