State releases funds for Choma theatre

GOVERNMENT has released the pending money requested by Choma General Hospital to operationalise the institution’s theatre room and enable it offer specialised medical treatment.

Meanwhile, a specialised physician has been sent to Choma General Hospital to beef up manpower and complete a set of specialist doctors; of physicians, surgeons, paediatrician and obstetricians as per requirement of every general hospital in the country.

A theatre at the hospital has been stalled for about two years due to lack of money amounting to about K120,000.
In January this year, Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya directed the Southern Province medical office to release the money to install the needed equipment.
Choma General Hospital acting medical superintendent David Linyama said in an interview recently that money for the theatre has been released and hospital management is waiting for the tender process to be completed in Lusaka.
Dr Linyama said the hospital has further received equipment to start the intensive care unit (ICU).
“We have been given the money for the theatre after a request was made. The challenge is now with the tender process but it is already underway and as soon as it is done we shall start works on the theatre,” he said.
Dr Linyama said the hospital is now poised to offer expert treatment following the allocation of a physician who joined the other specialised doctors last month.
He said the hospital is also ready to start receiving intern doctors because the institution has put everything in place to accommodate the trainee doctors.
Dr Linyama said money was released to prepare for intern doctors and that a library for their research has already been set aside.
He appealed to the business community in Choma to come to the aid of the hospital in supporting the mothers’ shelter which is currently unable to offer the best services to nursing parents.
The shelter was built by Spar Choma and donated to Choma General Hospital but it does not have mattresses, electricity and other necessities for human habitation.
