GOVERNMENT has released K47,000 to pay for 100 vulnerable pupils in Kazungula district this year.
Minister of Community Development and Social Welfare Emerine Kabanshi said Government paid for 37 pupils last year but that this was not enough to cater for most of the vulnerable children in the district.
“The 37 pupils Government was supporting last year was a small number, that is why we increased the number to 100 this year, and the numbers will increase further next year,” she said.
Ms Kabanshi said Government wants to ensure every child is in School hence the sponsorship of the pupils.
She said this programme is also aimed at reducing the number of early marriages in rural communities.
“Don’t marry off young children as that will retard development. We want all the children to be in school so that they can be better citizens in future,” she said.
Ms Kabanshi said educating these young citizens has the potential to contribute positively to the growth of the economy.
She advised vulnerable people in Kazungula district and across the country to visit the social welfare officers so that they are included on the list of beneficiaries for various programmes.
