State pays K431m for maize

GOVERNMENT has so far paid K431 million to farmers for maize purchased from them, from a total of K1.431 billion budgeted for the exercise, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Wylbur Simuusa has said.
Mr Simuusa said in an interview yesterday that Government will consider borrowing from commercial banks to offset the K1 billion balance that it owes farmers countrywide.
He said finding a market for maize is one of the ways in which the K1 billion balance can be offset.
Mr Simuusa said Government has not been able to pay because it went over its target tonnage of maize from the initial 500,000 metric tonnes to 1.3 million metric tonnes.
