State, IFAD promote animal health

GOVERNMENT in partnership with the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) has invested US$45 million in implementing the Small-Holder Livestock Investment Project (SLIP) aimed at promoting animal health and nutrition in rural areas.

Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock livestock production and productivity co-ordinator Johns Nyirongo said in an interview that the SLIP programme has many components, with one of them aimed at promoting animal nutrition to help farmers grow the animal population.
Dr Nyirongo said under the nutrition components, livestock farmers are taught how to cultivate foliage, which they can use to feed their animals during the dry season, thus promoting animal nutrition.
“Our focus is improving the lives of rural farmers by increasing their income through promoting animal health, ” he said.
