State commends Chipolopolo

GOVERNMENT has congratulated the Chipolopolo for beating Kenya in last Sunday’s 2017 Gabon Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Chief Government spokesperson, Chishimba Kambwili said in a statement yesterday that the victory reconfirms Zambia’s stature as a football powerhouse on the continent.
Kambwili, who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, said the players and the coaching bench deserved commendation for their determination, discipline and team work.
George Lwandamina-mentored Chipolopolo came from behind to beat Kenya 2-1 at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
Strikers Collins Mbesuma and Winston Kalengo contributed a goal apiece in a tense Group E qualifier.
“With this victory, Government is confident nothing will stop the team from qualifying for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and reclaim the cup it won in 2012 as African champions,” Kambwili said.
Government also commended soccer fans who travelled to Kenya for cheering the team to victory.
“The importance of football, like other sporting activities, goes beyond medals and entertainment. It is a unifying factor for peace and development, hence Government’s commitment to continue investing in this vital sector,” he said.
Government chartered a plane to ferry supporters to Kenya.
