State can’t start marijuana cultivation

GOVERNMENT cannot engage in cultivation of marijuana for either medicinal or export purposes before conducting comprehensive studies on how the business is done, Parliament heard yesterday.Acting Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Vincent Mwale said it would be irresponsible and medically unethical for Government to allow a toxic substance like marijuana to be administered to citizens.
He said although cultivating marijuana could have many economic benefits, Government has to be cautious to ensure that citizens are not put at risk of problems such as psychiatric illnesses.
