ZAMBIA’S International Master (IM) Stanley Chumfwa defied all odds to win the prestigious 2018 Zambia Open Chess Championship and relegate tournament’s favourite Egyptian Grand Master (GM) Hesham Abdelrahman into the third position.Chumfwa was tied on seven points with four other players, fellow Zambian Douglas Munenga, Abdelrahman, Geofrey Lwanja and Kelvin Chumfwa, but he won because of a better tie-breaker.
He pocked K30,000 while Munenga, who was second, got K25,000, Hesham was given K20,000, while Lwanja walked away with K15,000.
Chumfwa and Munenga were tied on 6.5 points going into round eight and people expected a nerve-wracking match but the game between the two joint leaders was the shortest in the final round finishing within five minutes.
