JACO Alhers of South Africa yesterday won the 2016 Konkola Copper Mines Zambia Open Golf Championship after outweighing compatriot Jacques Blaauw on a sudden-death play-off.
This is the second time the Zambia Open at Nchanga has been decided on a play-off, the previous being five years ago when Scottish Doug McGuigan beat South Africa’s Jean Hugo to the title.
Starting in second on the final day and having hit a bogey on the front nine, Blaauw seemed far from challenging for the title but managed to pick four birdies on the turn of the course to equal Alhers 17 under 271 and force a play-off.
The play-off was on the par four 18th hole.
“I cannot really describe the emotions right now. I have had my fair share of play-offs and I’m glad I could get this one done as well,” Alhers said.
Alhers pocketed R317,000 (about K220, 000).
