Solwezi to plant trees on 10 hectares

BUTTYSON KANDIMBA, Solwezi
THE Forestry Department in Solwezi has embarked on a programme to plant 10 hectares of pine trees across the district to curb deforestation.
District forestry officer Rachael Manda said in an interview during the week that cutting down of trees in Solwezi has become rampant leading to deforestation.  She said that so far, five hectares of pine trees have been planted.
“The issue of deforestation is now getting out of hand because of mineral exploration and expansion of farming activities,” she said.
Ms Manda expressed concern at the high level of encroachment on forest land in the district due to the expansion of the town.
