Solwezi council in K32m debt

THE Solwezi Municipal Council is struggling to offset a K32 million debt it owes financial institutions, statutory bodies and suppliers of goods and services.
Council assistant public relations manager Esther Chirwa said the local authority’s wage bill is in excess of K20 million and that half of this amount is financed using money collected from local taxes.
She said in response to a press query yesterday that the council owes various financial institutions K12 million in loans and has a debt of K17 million in statutory obligations.
Ms Chirwa said the local authority also owes various suppliers of goods and services K3 million.
