Siamupangila wins silver in Kampala

ZAMBIA’s badminton ace Ogar Siamupangila minted a silver medal in the women’s doubles category at the Uganda International Championship in Kampala.
Siamupangila partnered Africa’s best player Grace Gabriel of Nigeria to claim a runners-up position.
The duo lost to Cemre Fere and Ebru Yazgan 3-1 at MTN Arena Lugogo.
In the mixed doubles, Siamupangila and Donald Mabo lost to Bahaedeen Ahmad Alshannik and Domou Amro in three straight sets in the quarter-finals.
The event was used as a qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Siamupangila is rated 202 in the world.
Niluka Karunaratne of Sri Lanka overcame Pedro Martins to scoop the men’s singles title while Brazilian Telma Santos won the women’s title after defeating Kate Foo Kune 3-2.
Kalombo Mulenga also competed in the event but lost in the preliminary round.
Badminton Zambia general secretary Kingsley Mulenga, who released the results in Lusaka yesterday, was impressed with the players performance.
He, however, bemoaned Zambian player’s failure to compete in many qualifying tournaments due to lack of sponsorship.
“Most European players are eager to compete in African tournaments because they don’t face stiff competition. In Africa, it’s not as competitive as in Europe.
“But we cannot blame our players as they lack financial support. In Europe, a player earns a living through badminton. This tournament [Uganda International] is being used to gain points for the Rio 2016 Olympics,” Mulenga said.
