‘Siame, Mupopo in London for exposure’

MUPOPO

MATHEWS KABAMBA, Kitwe
FORMER 400m world champion Samuel Matete says Zambians should not expect medals from the International Association of Athletics

Federations (IAAF) World Championship starting tomorrow in London.
Sydney Siame and Kabange Mupopo are representing the country at the August 4-13 event.
“Winning a medal at such an event is not child’s play, the process starts way before the event. It will be unrealistic to expect a medal from the two. They are both talented but expecting a medal is asking for too much.
“There are some questions we need to ask ourselves. Are they anywhere near the top 20 athletes on world rankings? No. And they will be competing with highly rated runners and it is a difficult task,” Matete said in Kitwe yesterday.
He, however, urged the two runners to give their best shot and benefit from the exposure that comes with competing at high-profile tournaments.
Siame, a 200m runner, and 400m specialist Mupopo reached the semi-finals at the 2015 World Championship in Beijing, China.
