Shortage of wheat looms

A SHORTAGE of wheat has hit the country following a decline in the country’s reserve stock.
Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Given Lubinda disclosed the development in an interview on Thursday at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport.
Mr Lubinda said the shortage of wheat will be become more prevalent towards the end of this month.
He said Government is concerned with the situation adding that the ministry is doing everything possible to arrest the prevailing crisis.
“I would like to state that we have a shortage of wheat in the country. However, we are taking measures to resolve the matter by among other things exploring other sources of wheat,” he said.
Mr Lubinda said Government is taking steps to ensure the production and supply of bread is not disrupted as the commodity is a necessity.
“Bread is not a luxury and if we don’t take quick action, Zambians will not be happy with us. We just need to find a solution,” Mr Lubinda said.
Meanwhile, Mr Lubinda said there are adequate maize stocks in the reserves to sustain the country for the next two years.
Mr Lubinda said the country has surplus maize to export to countries like Zimbabwe, South Africa and  Democratic Republic of Congo.
