Shamenda warns foreign investors

CHALI MULENGA, Livingstone
MINISTER of Labour and Social Security Fackson Shamenda has urged foreign investors to stop mistreating workers.
Speaking when he made an impromptu visit to Golden Chopsticks Hotel in Livingstone yesterday, the minister said employers should allow Zambian professionals to handle their human resource issues.
“You should not be employing people as casuals because this will affect the quality of service at your hotel.  So you need to put people on probation first and then employ them. You cannot have a part-time chef or waiter,” he said.
Mr Shamenda also advised management against branding Zambian employees as thieves and to acquaint themselves with Zambia’s labour laws.
The minister was received by the hotel’s manager, Duan Wang Ching, and her assistant Ruth Mainza whom Mr Shamenda directed to start handling human resources matters.
