Seedco, ZNFU ponder partnership

By TRYNESS MBALE
SEEDCO plans to partner with the Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) to offer training to farmers to boost their production.
The training will be in in crop production, land preparation, early and timely planting, plant population and weed management.
SeedCo regional sales manager for eastern region Samuel Muyauka expressed concern that some farmers are still using recycled seed and conventional farming practices despite various interventions by both Government and the ZNFU.
“SeedCo has pledged to partner with the ZNFU in offering training to farmers. The partnership is intended to facilitate farmer trainings in various agriculture activities,” he said on the ZNFU website.
Mr Muyauka said partnering with ZNFU in service delivery would enhance the seed company’s access to farmers through the farmers’ body.
SNV, a Netherlands development organisation, has trained people in Mpika on agro-business principles.
“The purpose of the training was to make the agro-dealers of Mpika understand the vision, objectives and business principles,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, some farmers in Mpika say the poor state of feeder roads in the district had made it difficult for them to transport their maize to the Food Reserve Agency satellite depots.
“Farmers of Mpika have bemoaned poor state of the feeder roads in their areas. The poor state of roads has made transportation of their maize to Food Reserve Agency satellite depots very difficult,” the statement reads.
