Schoolgirls should learn value of education, Phiri

EDUCATION ninister John Phiri has charged that schoolgirls will only stop engaging in pre-marital sex,  a leading cause of teen pregnancies, if they realise the value of education.
And Dr Phiri has urged girls to wear three gowns of life in their order thus, first a school uniform, then a graduation gown and lastly a maternity dress and not the other way round.
He said pre-marital sex has led to many girls dropping out of school due to pregnancies.
He said this during the launch of the School Sensitisation Campaign dubbed ‘zero tolerance to premarital sex’ at Lusaka’s Kabulonga Girls Secondary School during the week.
Light Carriers Mission, heading the campaign,  is an organisation owned by representatives from various churches whose sole aim is to empower young people with messages of abstinence and be torch bearers.
Dr Phiri also commended Light Carriers Mission for launching such a campaign and called other organisations to emulate that.
Additionally, Light Carriers Mission project director Bernard Mwanda said rising teen pregnancies have continued to frustrate Government efforts and the attainment of Millennium Development Goals.
Mr Mwanda is confident that the campaign will empower and educate young people on the dangers of engaging in pre-marital sex.
“Government has introduced the re-entry policy and it is wise that girls take advantage of,” Mr Mwanda said.
