Scanner installed at Nakonde Border Post to curb smuggling

MELODY MUPETA, Nakonde
GOVERNMNET has procured a scanner at Nakonde Border Post in Nakonde district in Muchinga province to curb the rampant smuggling of goods.
Nakonde Border Post is ranked as one of the most notorious borders in the country known for

the smuggling goods, leading to revenue loss.
Nakonde district commissioner Field Simwinga said in an interview yesterday that the procurement of the scanner has come at the right time as Government is losing a lot of revenue due to smuggling.
“The scanner has come at the right time. Most of the uncertified goods are being smuggled out of the country without being detected,” he said.
Mr Simwinga said the scanner will help detect goods that are in transit.
He said officers from the Zambia Revenue Authority cannot manage to offload all the goods in transit during inspection and as a result, smugglers take advantage of the situation.
Mr Simwinga said the procurement of the scanner will also help curb human trafficking that occurs in most border towns.
He commended Government for the procurement of the scanner which will see the district getting rid of smugglers at the border post.
