CHRISTINE CHIHAME, Samfya
LUAPULA Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa has directed Samfya Municipal Council to urgently secure land for construction of a convention
centre in the district.
Mr Chilangwa said there is need for the province to have a convention centre to host high-level conferences.
He made the directive when he addressed civil servants and council workers at the Samfya Civic Centre during a post-Luapula Expo and Investment Conference meeting on Wednesday.
Mr Chilangwa said the carnival mood that was experienced in Samfya during the Luapula Expo should prompt both the provincial and district administrations to begin considering to build a convention centre which can accommodate over 1,000 delegates.
“Samfya district has all it takes to host an international conference and I am urging the council to immediately find land so that we can find a developer that can work with us to build a convention centre,” Mr Chilangwa said.
He said a small team to be called ‘conference hunters’ will be constituted to source for conferences, market and offers to host events once the convention centre is built.
Meanwhile, Mr Chilangwa said it is time for the province to begin reaping the gains from the Luapula Expo.
“By hosting such a big thing, we just managed to give ourselves enough visibility. People now know we exist in Luapula Province but there is need to benefit from this before we begin planning for another expo.
“We have to bring back all investors who attended our expo so that they can bring their money here,” Mr Chilangwa said.
He said the expo was like a grain field which was ripe for harvest, hence the need to immediately get to work to harvest the fruits.
He said increasing economic activities in the province will create jobs for people, thereby enabling them to have more money in their pockets.
