Reduction in tobacco price affects growth

THE continued reduction in tobacco price has negatively affected the growth of the sector, Tobacco Association of Zambia (TAZ) has said.
In the last three years, tobacco prices for different types have been declining with Virginia fc and Burley averaging US$2.5 and US$1.9 per kilogramme (kg) respectively this year.
TAZ has attributed the decline in the prices to low rainfall in tobacco concentrated-growing areas.
In its annual report, TAZ says the decline in the price of tobacco has led to the sector becoming less profitable.
