Rebecca Malope honoured

REBECCA Malope.

KELVIN KACHINGWE, Johannesburg
SOUTH African gospel singer Rebecca Malope brought church to the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Saturday where she was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the second DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards (DMVCA).
Yes, you can say the biggest winner at the glitzy awards show expertly hosted by media personality Bonang Matheba was actress Thembsie Matu, who acts as the mouthy Petronella in The Queens for taking home the Ultimate Viewers Choice Award and Favourite Actress Award, but you still have to give Malope the headline.
Rebecca, who wowed the audience with her medley performance of her hit songs, was recognised for her 30- year career in music.
In her acceptance speech in which she thanked her family and fans, she talked about how it all started. And the start was not easy.
She also bemoaned the fact that though famous, most artistes are poor as the returns from their careers are too low.
But there was still more to the awards with the likes of Kwesta, Sjava, Bucie, Mlindo The Vocalist, Sho Madjozi, Dumi Mkokstad, Ntokozo Mbambo, Khaya Mthethwa, Mafikizolo and DJ Maphorisa all performing.
You also have to give special mention to host Bonang, who pipped arch-rival Somizi Mhlongo to the Personality of the Year Award, for not missing a beat. Oh, and her outfits were also on point.
But Mafikizolo next; they were simply superb.
With vocalist Nhlanhla Nciza catching the eye with her quick change of outfits as well as her colourful hair, the duo performed old classics and mixed them up with some contemporary hits. The crowd simply loved it.
But it was also good that DJ Maphorisa featuring Moonchild and Zulu Mkhathini closed off the two-hour show with their chart-topper iWalk Ye Phara because after that, you do not want anything added to the show.
The winners: Favourite Song of the Year (Prince Kaybee & LaSoulmates ft Zanda Zakuza & TNS – Club Controller); Favourite Comedian (Skumba); Favourite TV Presenter (Pearl Modiadie); Favourite Personality of the Year (Bonang Matheba); Favourite Rising Star (Distruction Boyz); Favourite Radio Personality (Ntate Thuso Motaung); Favourite Actor (Warren Masemola); Favourite Actress (Thembsie Matu); Favourite Music Artist or Group (Khuzani); Favourite DJ (Black Coffee); Favourite Sports Personality (Caster Semenya), Ultimate Viewers’ Choice (Thembsie Matu); and Legend Award (Rebecca Malope).
