Raubex start works on Muchinga link

From NANCY SIAME in Mpika
PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Mfuwe member of Parliament Mwimba Malama says the construction of a road to link Muchinga and Eastern Provinces has started at a cost of K billion.
Mr Malama told journalists here on Wednesday that Government has engaged China Henan and Raubex Construction to construct the 265 kilometer road.
“The stretch is too long and there is too much work, that is why we have engaged two contractors so that they can meet half way,” Mr Malama said.
He said the road will start from Mpika through to Chief Nabwalya area and into Eastern Province.
“The road will connect the two provinces and people will no longer have to go round to get to the other end,” he said.
Mr Malama, who is also Deputy Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications,   said part of the road will pass through  North and South Luangwa National Park.
He said the people of Nabwalya will benefit from the road because they face challenges to get to Mpika.
Mr Malama said it is an expensive project but government has a duty to deliver development to the people.
“We know that it is expensive but there is nothing we can do because if we do not do it, no one will,” Mr Malama said.
He said the contractor has already moved on site and waiting for the Ministry of Finance to release the initial payment.
“My people will be very happy as you can see the road is very bad and there isn’t much business opportunities for them because they have to travel for over five hours before getting to Mpika,” Mr Malama said.
He said the project is part of the Link Zambia 8,000 road project.
“This very pleasing for me because am MP for this area and Deputy Minister in charge of Transport Works and Supply. I will ensure that my people get a good road network because they deserve it,” he said.
