Punza, Munyonga get IJF scholarships

WALUSUNGU SILWEYA, Lusaka
THE International Judo Federation (IJF) has awarded Mathews Punza and Boas Munyonga scholarships.
National team coach Moola Lipimile said in Lusaka yesterday that Punza, 27, and Munyonga, 32, have been given the scholarships to prepare for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Lipimile said the scholarships are for two years and the two will be based in Uzbekistan.
This is the second time Punza and Munyonga are being considered for Olympic scholarships after benefiting from the Algeria programme in 2010.
Lipimile said the judokas are scheduled to travel to Uzbekistan this monthend.
He urged Munyonga and Punza to utilise the opportunity as it is a rare privilege.
“Punza and Munyonga will be exposed to the best facilities and nutrition and we urge them to cease this opportunity by improving on what they already know,” Lipimile said.
Munyonga won a bronze medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games while Punza came back empty-handed.
