THE Auditor General’s reports have revealed glaring abuse of financial resources through misappropriation of public funds by some civil servants in government ministries and departments.
The accounting officers are the major culprits. These officers have been cited in the Auditor General’s report year in, year out.
However, it is worrying that those entrusted with the responsibility of accounting for public financial resources are the ones embezzling the funds.
In the recent past, some accounting officers have been nabbed for stealing public funds amounting to millions of kwacha. This is retrogressive because these resources could be channelled to developing other sectors of the economy such as agriculture, education and health, among others.
Given the above scenario, I implore the Police, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to arrest erring civil servants who misappropriate public resources.
They should be prosecuted so that they can face the full wrath of the law. Ultimately, this will deter would-be offenders.
