Project ‘pencil’ to help vulnerable children

LINDA NYONDO, Lusaka
REFORMED Open Community Schools (ROCs) staff have embarked on a project called ‘pencil’ to raise funds to support 50, 000 vulnerable children with school requisites in five districts.
The districts include Monze, Mbala, Mafinga, Chama and Lundazi.
According to a statement issued recently, ROCS executive director Marlon Phiri said staff will be making contributions to raise funds to buy school requisites.
“The lack of requisites such as books and pencils is forcing children to stay away from school because their parents cannot afford to meet the cost of buying the required items,’’ he said.
Mr Phiri said the failure by parents to buy school requisites has prompted staff to contribute money to purchase pencils and other school requirements to assist pupils, especially girls, who are usually disadvantaged.
