Be proactive, agro planners urged

GREEN FARMERS are being encouraged to manage weeds in fields to encourage water retention and better soil quality.

KELLY NJOMBO, Lusaka
NORTHERN Province permanent secretary Hlobota Nkunika has urged provincial agriculture co-ordinator (PACO) to be proactive in working with cooperatives in the province by establishing out-grower schemes that could help farmers increase crop production.
Mr Nkunika said small-scale farmers who participate in out-grower schemes achieve significantly higher wealth compared to individual farmers, as most of them have access to market linkages and knowledge.
“I implore the PACO to work closely with cooperatives to maximise rural farmers’ participation in out-grower schemes as they are one possible way to overcome challenges faced by rural farmers such low productivity, lack of market access among others,” he said in an interview in Kasama recently.
Mr Nkunika said with maximised agricultural productivity, the province has the potential to contribute significantly to food security as well as job creation.
