MWILA NTAMBI, Kitwe
TRADERS at Chisokone Market in Kitwe are happy with President Lungu’s commitment to facilitating conducive trading environments.
In an interview shortly after President Lungu commissioned a market shelter at Kitwe’s Chisokone market on Saturday, Florence Ngándwe, a trader in the market, said President Lungu’s compassion and empathy for informal sector workers are admirable.
Mrs Ngándwe said the informal sector is an important contributor to the country’s economy because it contributes significantly to council revenue through market levies and fees, thereby enabling the local authorities to provide improved services to the public.
Mrs Ngándwe said President Lungu’s personal contribution of K250,000 towards the rebuilding of the market shelter after it collapsed in December last year is a mark of good leadership.
Another trader, Phoebe Mulambisha, said street vendors only want to earn a living and “so the President is right when he says the councils should be civil in the manner they handle vendors”.
