President Sata dies

YANDE SYAMPEYO, Lusaka
PRESIDENT Sata has died.  He was 77 years old.
Mr Sata died at 23:11hrs on Tuesday at London’s  King Edward VII Hospital where he was receiving treatment.
Secretary to Cabinet, Rowland Msiska disclosed this today in an address to the nation on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).
“Fellow countrymen and women, as you are aware, Mr Sata, has been receiving medical attention in London, in the United Kingdom.
“However, it is with a very heavy heart that I address you today to inform the nation that our beloved President and leader, His Excellency, Mr Michael Chilufya Sata has passed on. The Head of State passed on October 28, 2014, in London at 23:11 hours, Zambian time at King Edward VII hospital,” he said.
Dr Msiska said First Lady Christine Kaseba, his son Mulenga, who is also Lusaka mayor was among others that were present at the bedside at the time the president died.
He said the President’s demise is regretted and has since urged Zambians to remain calm, united and peaceful during the mourning period.
“During this difficult period, I urge all of you to remain calm, united and peaceful during this very difficult period,” Dr Msiska said.
He said details regarding the funeral and burial arrangements will be announced later.
President Sata left for London on October 20 this month.
Mr Sata was born on July 6, 1937.  He became the fifth president of Zambia on September 23,  2011 after a popular poll.
