SYLVESTER CHISHIMBA, Lusaka
POWER Tools Bus Services has donated K50, 000 to Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) towards the hosting of the international tournament that will see former World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight champion Catherine Phiri facing Matshidiso Mokebisi of South Africa in a non-title bout.
OQBP operations manager Christopher Malunga said in Lusaka yesterday that the donation leaves the budget deficit at K250, 000.
The budget for the tournament set for Ndola on Sunday is K500,000.
Catherine, who lost the WBC title to Mariana Juarez of Mexico in March this year, will be using the bout to redeem herself.
OQBP will also stage a non-title fight between former WBC welterweight silver champion Charles Manyuchi and Sherif Kasongo.
And the Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) has urged its affiliates to take part in the national boxing tournament billed for this weekend in Ndola.
ZBF general secretary Brighton Chomba said the competition is aimed at tapping talent for the national team.
“This is a very important tournament because we want to pick boxers that will be part of the national team.
