THE poultry industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in Zambia.
It has become a reliable and steady source of income for thousands of workers and unemployed citizens.
I would like to urge the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, to give this sub-sector the same attention it is giving to livestock production.
Chickens are easy to rear, which is why they have pulled many widows out of destitution.
The Poultry Association of Zambia should not underrate the potential of its industry.
It should mount a countrywide recruitment campaign to capture all the informal poultry producers.
Belonging to the association will greatly benefit the small-scale (backyard) producers through capacity building, linkages to markets and financial support.
This sub-sector can soon be a force to reckon with in Zambia’s economy.
