Pontoon sinks in Zambezi

RESIDENTS of Zambezi West have been cut off from the rest of the district after a pontoon which is used to ferry people, vehicles and goods across the Zambezi River sank on Saturday.
Zambezi district commissioner Lawrence Kayumba said in an interview yesterday that the pontoon was transporting four culverts, bags of cement and  a Zambia National Service (ZNS)  low bed truck and trailer for road construction to the Zambezi west bank when it sank.
He said there was no loss of life when the pontoon sank and fishermen helped to rescue the passengers from the sinking vessel.
Mr Kayumba said the pontoon and the truck are submerged and that ZNS officers are doing their best to retrieve the earthmoving equipment.
