Dear Editor,
I AGREE with the author of the letter ‘Opposite sex marriage source of family unity’ of April 26, 2013.
This writer was right when he asserted that marriage can only be understood as the lawful union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others.
It is, therefore, saddening to read and watch in various foreign media stories of legalisation of same-sex marriages.
Needless to say that the very same measure of strength we Africans use to denounce same-sex marriages and cohabiting is the very measure Western world uses to denounce polygamy, which we have tolerated.
It is also the same measure of strength with which the West condemns the drinking of raw blood of a brutally slaughtered animal as a way of honouring our ‘ancestral spirits’ during traditional ceremonies.
So, to what extent do human rights become real? At what extent do we draw the line?
Not all the cultures we embrace from the Western world are of benefit to us.
Similarly, not all that the Western world embraces from Africa is of benefit to them.
The Bible has a very clear position on all these matters; let the Church redirect its energies to speaking even louder on these matters affecting society today.
Let us call a spade a spade: marriage is the source of the family unit.
MALAWO CHIBAMBULA,
Kabwe.
