Police detain 4 Chipata farmers

DARLINGTON MWENDABAI, Chipata
POLICE in Chipata have detained four peasant farmers for allegedly attempting to stage an illegal protest at Eastern Province permanent secretary Chileshe Mulenga’s office over delayed payment for maize supplied to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).
Eastern Province commissioner of police Grace Chipalila told journalists yesterday that police have detained the four farmers for allegedly staging an illegal demonstration.
Ms Chipalila warned politicians against inciting farmers to protest over delayed payment for maize supplied to FRA.
“Farmers should not demonstrate anyhow because last week, they were told by Government that the matter is being addressed and today they wanted to demonstrate. As Police, we want peace and order in the region,” Ms Chipalila said.
Police in full riot gear yesterday peacefully advised the farmers to return to their respective homes because they already met Dr Mulenga over the matter last week.
