Police arrest eight illegal log traders

ILLEGAL TIMBER

FROM HOPE NYOKA in Chipata
POLICE in Chipata have arrested eight people in connection with the illegal harvest and trade of over 300 logs of the Mukula tree.
Acting principal forest extension officer Sylvester Siame said the suspects were picked up from Misholo area last week.
Mr Siame said in  an interview on Monday that the suspects are currently in detention and will appear in court soon.
He said the department in partnership with law enforcement agencies has in the past few months intensified patrols in the province.
Mr Siame said the department is bent on curbing the illegal harvest and trade of timber especially the Mukula.
“Anyone who will be found wanting in such illegal activities will face the wrath of the law,” Mr Siame said.
He said there is need to seal loopholes at Mwami border as most of the timber is smuggled through the border post.
Mr Siame said the department and law enforcement officers will further intensify patrols in Misholo, Chiparamba and Mazyatuwa as these are areas prone to the illegal activity.
