THERE is nothing wrong in Zambia having the Public Order Act, which dates back to 1955.
The law was effectively used by the colonial masters to suppress the freedom of assembly of African freedom fighters.
All governments in Zambia starting with UNIP, MMD and PF found this law, which is currently used to maintain law and order. Imagine if three organisations wanted to stage a protest on the same road and day.
There would be chaos as police may fail to effectively protect the marchers or organisers.
The PF government has shown serious commitment to review the POA.
I hope all well-meaning Zambians will make positive submissions when the time comes.
We need to include the POA in the training of police officers too.
We need to strike a balance.
