Plans under way to build Solwezi modern bus station

BUTTYSON KANDIMBA, Solwezi
THE Solwezi Municipal Council (SMC) says plans are under way to build a modern bus station and market in the district.
Solwezi Municipal Council housing and social services director Justin Mbashila said land earmarked for the project has already been identified at the former United Bus of Zambia (UBZ) bus station in Kyawama area.
Mr Mbashila said in an interview yesterday that the council has realised that there has been inadequate investment in infrastructure in the district and the council wants to embark on an urban renewal exercise to construct modern infrastructure within the Solwezi central business district.
He said negotiations to build an integrated facility for the market and bus station are on course with the help of Government, which will provide security for the financing of the project.
“There is a modern market that the council has been working on in terms of planning, that facility is an integrated facility, it has a market and a bus station and the site for the market and the bus station is around old-UBZ but there are still a lot of negotiations going on with the current owners of that space, who are the Zambia National Service,” he said.
He said the project, once implemented, will create enough trading space and also help bring sanity in the running of markets and bus stations in the district.
Mr Mbashila said the local authority is determined to ensure that the existing infrastructure within the central business district is improved.
“There has been inadequate investment in infrastructure that is why you see that most of our infrastructure is old,” he said.
