AT THE core of child protection issues in Zambia that the Ministry of Gender is battling are child and early marriages, unintended pregnancies involving minors and sexual violence, too. A United Nations Child’s Fund (UNICEF)-supported survey in 2016 found that about 58.9 percent of girls aged 15-19 years were pregnant or had already given birth, while 31.4 percent of women aged 20-24 years were married before the age of 18. And about 20.3 percent of women and 10 percent of men aged 20-24 years experienced sexual violence as children.
Against this background, the Ministry of Gender developed the National Strategy on Ending Child Marriage 2016 – 2021 to curb child marriages and all its related negative cultural practices.
Last year, the ministry took a step further and launched the Advocacy and Communication Strategy 2018 – 2021, which was developed to facilitate the implementation of the National Strategy on Ending Child Marriage.http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
