Phiri finishes ninth at Africa Championship

INTERNATIONAL Master (IM) Richmond Phiri missed out on qualification for the World Cup slated for Georgia after finishing in ninth position at the Africa Individual

Chess Championship in Algeria.
Phiri managed five points.
His compatriot IM Chitumbo Mwali was in distant 17th position with 4.5 points.
Phiri beat Algerian Gueroui Nacereddine in round one before recording three straight stalemates with IM Cawdery Daniel, Grand Master (GM) Hesham Abdelrahman of Egypt and Mwali respectively.
The former national champion picked up form in round five beating IM Silva David of Angola before playing out to a stalemate with Egyptian GM El Gindy Essam in round six.
In round seven, Phiri beat Candidate Master (CM) Bouzidi Ahmed of Tunisia but lost to GM Amin Bassem and IM Belouadah Saad in round eight and nine respectively.
Mwali endured a bad tournament after managing three wins, three stalemates and three losses.
