HENRY SINYANGWE, Kasama
AS ZAMBIA steps up its robust campaign against child marriages, Chief Kaputa of the Bemba people of Northern Province has decided to go a step further by ordering the detention of five parents and their children for perpetrating the scourge.
The chief said in an interview that he is appalled by the high number of child marriages in his chiefdom and has pledged to fight it with every ounce of his energy.
He said he had the five parents and their children detained recently for engaging in the vice, but was disappointed to learn that the sus-pects had managed to convince the police that their children were above 18 years when it was not true.
The chief said he is facing challenges fighting the vice and that his chiefdom is in the learning stages.
“We want to learn from Chief Nkula, who has managed to contain the vice. We have made some efforts and made some arrests but the parents are not cooperative,” he said.
