Oriental raise K327,000 for WBC fight

By ELIZABETH CHATUVELA
ORIENTAL Quarries Boxing Promotion (OQBP) have raised K327, 000 for the World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight silver defence title fight between champion Catherine Phiri and Hee-Yung Yuh of South Korea.
The budget is K653,000 and the fight is set for November 22 at Lusaka’s Government Complex.
OQBP director of operations Christopher Malunga said in Lusaka yesterday they have received overwhelming support from the corporate world.
Malunga expressed confidence that the shortfall will be raised soon.
“This is a very important fight for Catherine and already, half of our budget has been raised. We have also received a number of pledges which will materialise soon looking at the companies that have come on board,” he said.
Malunga said Catherine has intensified preparations.
Yuh, 34, has fought 14 times – winning 12 with four knockouts and two losses.
Catherine will face Asha Njedere of Tanzania in an exhibition fight in Kasama on August 30.
