OQBP raises K400,000 for Phiri’s fight

ORIENTAL Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) has raised K400,000 for this monthend’s World Boxing Council (WBC) silver bantamweight defence title fight between Catherine Phiri and Bukiwe Nonina of South Africa.
OQBP operations director Chris Malunga said in Lusaka yesterday that they are working round the clock to raise K678,000.
“Our shortfall is K278,000. We are hopeful the budget will be met before the tournament. A lot of companies have shown interest in sponsoring the fight. We are looking forward to staging a successful event,” Malunga said.
The fight is billed for November 22 at Government Complex in Lusaka.
WBC international welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi will defend the title against David Carcese of Colombia.
Nonina and Carcese are both expected in Lusaka on November 18 while officials who will handle the fights will arrive two days later.
Catherine and Manyuchi’s fights will be supervised by WBC board of governor Peter Ngatane of South Africa and Zambia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board chairperson Nelson Sapi while William Sekeleti will be the referee.
The judges are Lilian Olero of Kenya, Thabo Sampool of South Africa and Zimbabwe’s Patrick Mkondiwa.
