LINDA NYONDO, Lusaka
UNIVERSITY of Zambia (UNZA) management says the institution will open on October 4 as scheduled following the lecturers’agreement to release students’ examination results.
UNZA public relations manager Damaseke Chibale said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that following the agreement by lecturers to release the results, management will commence administrative work.
Mr Chibale said the lecturers agreed to release students’ results after a meeting they had with Government and UNZA management to chart the way forward on how the K320 million owed to them and allied workers would be liquidated.
“We are appealing to our students to remain calm; the university will open as scheduled. There will be no disruption. The first year students will open on 4th October, and returning students will open a week later,†he said.
And Ministry of Education public relations officer Hillary Chipango commended the lecturers for agreeing to release the students’ results.
Mr Chipango said the move by the lecturers is an indication of their commitment to contributing to the education sector.
“We are excited and pleased with the decision by the lecturers to release the results. We thank all parties involved in the negotiations, especially the lecturers and the students,’’ he said.
University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union (UNZALARU) agreed to release students’ examination results because Government secured K150 million towards payment of retirement and contractual obligation dues. The affected workers are owed a total of K320 million, which has accumulated over close to two decades.
