GREEN Buffaloes have appointed Wedson Nyirenda as head coach on a one-year contract.
The club executive committee and Nyirenda were yesterday finalising the deal with the former Zesco United and Zanaco coach optimistic of taking the Zambia Army-sponsored side to higher heights.
Buffaloes chairperson Simon Silungwe said the club is yet to finalise Nyirenda’s contract.
“We gave him our conditions and he had his own condition, so we are yet to harmonise and finalise the contract. It is a one-year renewable contract,” Silungwe said.
“The deal is almost done. It is about 90 percent complete, only a few issues remaining which will be finalised in today’s [yesterday] meeting,” Nyirenda said.
Nyirenda said in Lusaka yesterday that Buffaloes are a big club with a rich history and will strive to ensure success.
Last season, Buffaloes finished 10th with 36 points, 23 behind champions Zesco.
Nyirenda said there is a lot of work to be done to rebuild the foundation of the team and it will require consented effort from all stakeholders.
Buffaloes last won the Super Division title in 1981.
Nyirenda stamped authority on the local front in 2007 guiding Zesco to the Super Division title and the Ndola-based side retained the title the following year.
Bilton Musonda, who drilled the team last season, will be Nyirenda’s assistant.
Nyirenda’s last assignment was with Mozambican side HCB Songo, the club he joined in 2013 and quit last year.
Meanwhile, Super Division Nakambala Leopards will maintain coach Wilson Mwale.
Club chairman Lloyd Mwale said from Mazabuka yesterday that the club will stick with Mwale despite the team’s finishing in 12th position with 36 points last season.
