Nyimba DC commends UNDP for promoting gender equality

PANIC CHILUFYA, Nyimba
NYIMBA district commissioner Fabian Lungu has commended the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Gender and Child Development (MGCD) for promoting gender equality in Zambia.
Mr Lungu was speaking at Nyimba grounds on Monday when he officiated at `HeforShe` road show where the campaign ambassadors Shadrick Mumba known as Yachi and Kondwani Kaira aka Chef 187 performed.
He said it was important to support the girls to enable them achieve their highest potential so that they are empowered to become whatever they wish to become in life without any hindrance.
“I do not support early marriages. Girls should only be allowed to get married once they have completed their education when they are much older to make informed decisions,” Mr Lungu said.
Mr Lungu said sensitisation campaigns such as the HeforShe road show will positively impact on the people of Nyimba in tackling cases of gender-based violence (GBV).
Especially that the World Vision has set up a one-stop center at Nyimba district hospital, victims do not need to first go to the police to get a report before they can be attended to.
“This has reduced the movement of victims because all documentation is done right at the hospital,” he said.
He said the setting up of the one-stop center has helped in reducing GBV in the district.
He however implored the media to help sensitise the people as the center which is manned by volunteers is not adequate to cover the entire district which has five chiefdoms.
“There are four chiefs in the valley and one in the plateau, so it is not possible for World Vision to adequately cover all these areas hence the need for the media to come in and assist,” he said.
