MWILA NTAMBI, Kitwe
A NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisation has commended Government for the various road construction projects it has launched on the Copperbelt which will boost
economic activities in the province.
Change Mindset Zambia president Geoffrey Musonda said in an interview in Kitwe that a good road network is critical to economic development of any country.
Mr Musonda said good roads enable business people complete their transactions in good time, in addition to making it easier for farmers to transport inputs and their produce to the market.
And Mr Musonda appealed to local construction companies which will be subcontracted to carry out some of the road works to ensure that they do a good job.
He said it is surprising that foreign contractors that do not directly benefit from using Zambian roads do a better job compared to the local ones.
“Our appeal to the local contractors is that let them change their mind-set. When they are given contracts, let them execute them professionally. This is the only way more Zambians will benefit from future projects,” Mr Musonda said.
He said local contractors have a lot of work to do in shedding off the negative public perception about them.
Mr Musonda said Government has already demonstrated its commitment to enabling Zambians to participate in the construction sector by ensuring that 20 percent of road contracts are given to local firms.
