New SI on tobacco to increase transparency

Tobacco farming.

MOST tobacco farmers say the enactment of the new statutory instrument (SI) in the sub-sector will increase transparency in the buying system.
Currently, Government is in the process of enacting SI number 84 and 85 to help address various challenges faced by the tobacco farmers such as exploitation of farmers by sponsors and buyers.
Farmers also say that the introduction of SI number 84 for merchants to submit the price matrix to Tobacco Board of Zambia for approval will ensure that no farmer sells tobacco below the cost of production.
The tobacco growers say the new laws will address challenges like the lack of transparency in the buying system by introducing international standards.
They note that the system that allows the sponsors and buyers to run the sales floors has perpetuated exploitation of farmers as they lose an element of independence during the time of marking.
