Ndola man jailed 10 months for trafficking in marijuana

By MUBANGA NONDO
THE Ndola Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 24 -year-old man of Nkwazi Township in Ndola to 10 months imprisonment with hard labour for trafficking in 1.3 kilogrammes of marijuana.
Magistrate Eston Kafunyi on Monday convicted Abraham Chimpukisa of house number 0978, in Nkwazi, who admitted a charge of  drug trafficking.
Mr Kafunyi said that he jailed the accused because the amount of drugs involved was massive.
“I have noted that you are a first offender and that you admitted the charge without wasting the court’s time. But looking at the amount of drugs that is involved, I have no option but to send you to prison.”
Chimpukisa admitted to illegal trafficking in 1.3 kilogrammes of marijuana.
In mitigation, Chimpukisa asked the court not to send him to jail as his wife was pregnant and that he had never bought anything in preparation for his wife’s delivery.
He also vowed never to deal in marijuana again.
Facts before court were that Mr Chrispin Mulenga, an assistant investigations officer at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Ndola, received information that there was a man in Nkwazi township who was dealing in suspected marijuana.
During investigations, Mr Mulenga went to a place where Chimpukisa was found but upon seeing the officers from the DEC, he fled  but he was later apprehended.
The court heard that a black and white plastic bag containing the suspected marijuana was found in his makeshift stall during  search.
Chimpukisa admitted ownership upon being shown the contents in the plastic bag.
